When same-sex marriage was legalised across the United States, Instagram responded by setting their weekend hashtag project as #WHPRainbow. TIME featured my photograph and story in their coverage of the 35 million people who shared their pride on Instagram that weekend.

"I remember being told by those who were supposed to love me, that I would never find love. They monitored how I walked, how I talked, and shot artillery from under the guise that this was for my benefit. But our world is ever changing, and their words are becoming ever more difficult to justify. I feel nothing but immense gratitude and pride. Thank you to the people who have fought and continue to fight, to give individuals like me, the freedom to love and express our authentic selves. Thank you to those in my life, and in yours, who are shoulders to lean on and hands to hold. I feel so privileged to be a part of the generation that bears witness to this change in public consciousness. I remember being told that people like me would never be able to find success. They were wrong; we’re winning."
